Did you know that each dollar spent in restaurants generates an extra two dollars in sales for other industries? According to the National Restaurant Association (NRA), sales average $1.8 million across 980,000 U.S. restaurant locations daily, with 2013 sales expected to reach $660.5 billion. Employing 12.8 million Americans, it is clear that the foodservice industry plays a significant role in the health of the U.S. economy.

Xylem is headed to the Windy City to exhibit at this year’s NRA Show from May 18-21. Held at McCormick Place in downtown Chicago, Ill., the event will bring together more than 61,000 restaurant and foodservice buyers from all 50 states and more than 100 countries to discuss the latest trends and products in the foodservice and hospitality industries.

Market leaders, including Xylem, will share innovations, information and trends in more than 900 product categories, and make connections with restaurant owners, operators and other decision-makers from more than 40 foodservice segments.

Xylem will showcase beverage dispense technologies from its Flojet brand, including the launch of two new products. Visitors to the Xylem booth can also engage with a broad range of other energy-efficient beverage dispense pumps that shorten time and reduce waste, as well as innovations for quality control and food safety, such as precision thermometers, data loggers and fat oil monitors.

The trends and ideas shared and lasting connections forged at the NRA Show will help drive profitability for restaurant and hospitality businesses long after the event. The business conducted at and after NRA will help bolster the foodservice industry throughout 2013.

We hope to see you at booth 4456 at NRA 2013 to discuss the latest in beverage dispense technologies. If you cannot attend, you can learn more about Flojet at www.flojet.com.

Chicago, Ill. — May 18, 2013 — Xylem Inc., a leading global water technology company focused on addressing the world’s most challenging water issues, today launched the Flojet brand V-Jet series rotary vane pump heads for beverage carbonation. The announcement was made at the 2013 National Restaurant Association (NRA) show in Chicago at McCormick Place. These beverage displacement units that support minimal downtime and extended product life will be on display at Xylem booth 4456.

The V-Jet series low flow, high pressure positive displacement rotary vane pump heads were developed for applications including beverage carbonation, water dispensing, water boosting, espresso or coffee machine operations and coolant recirculation systems.

The pump heads are a reliable choice for restaurants and coffee shops looking to invest in a cost-effective product that requires minimal repairs or servicing. Engineered to minimize downtime as a result of common errors, the product line exceeds industry standard dry run and blocked outlet tests, resulting in a product lifecycle that extends beyond typical rotary vane pumps.

“V-Jet series pumps give restaurant and coffee shop owners peace of mind that the equipment they purchase will continue to run effectively even if an outside error occurs,” said Andrew Lager, product manager, Flojet. “With nearly 50 years of leadership in the beverage dispense market, the Flojet brand is committed to delivering a product that will withstand the rigors and environment of beverage dispense operations today.”

Flojet’s patented vane venting system replaces traditional technologies, enabling high-pressure carbonation when needed but reducing product wear when the supply feed is interrupted. This system ensures the product will continue to deliver hot or carbonated beverages to customers consistently. Additionally, dual carbonated and still beverage service capabilities provide a single product to beverage customers, streamlining vendor management and giving proprietors the ability to serve multiple types and/or specialty drinks.

“The V-Jet pump series is a thoughtful product line that takes several key factors facing restaurant owners into consideration,” said Lager. “We’ve included everything from zero brass content for added consumer safety and flexibility of switching between carbonated and still applications, to improved maintenance schedules and intuitive technology that reduces user error.”

Other product highlights include a plastic pump body that complies with legislation to enhance the safety of beverage consumption, drop-in replacement features for easy installation, and a cost-effective filter solution for recirculation scenarios.

Morton Grove, Ill. — June 4, 2013Xylem Inc., a leading global water technology company focused on addressing the world’s most challenging water issues, recently unveiled two Flojet brand products – the BevJet Compact and the V-Jet series rotary vane pumps – at the 2013 National Restaurant Association (NRA) trade show, held in Chicago, May 18-21.

The BevJet Compact is designed to distribute water, wine, non-pulp juices, iced teas, alcohol (less than 15 percent concentration), syrups and more through the motorized unit. The system is ideal for applications requiring flow rates from 0.8 to 1.0 GPM (3.0 – 3.8 L/Min). Created to fit into tight spaces, the beverage dispense system is easy to install in cabinets, carts or any under counter application, making it a reliable beverage solution for food kiosks, drink stalls and small restaurant and vending operations.

The system employs intelligent automatic shut-off technology that senses when a bag-in-box or bottled water unit is depleted. The automatic shut-off feature is supported by Flojet’s leading electric diaphragm pump technology that ensures a long service life.

The event is being held at Holyoke Community College in Holyoke, Mass. The school’s location along the western bank of the Connecticut River provides the perfect backdrop for the event.

Students from school districts in the surrounding area, including Holyoke, Chicopee, Westfield, Wilbraham, Hampden and Webster, are attending the all-day festival to learn about topics such as the cycle of water, water quality and water conservation through interactive, hands-on activities.

Throughout the day, kids are enjoying activities, such as:

  • Edible Aquifer – A fun spin on an ice cream social, this session teaches students about water and geology by building aquifers out of ice cream and toppings.
  • Bubble-ology – Students are enclosed in large bubbles, as they learn about the chemical properties of water.
  • Big Rig – A real, well-drilling truck is onsite to teach kids how wells are built, while displaying the machinery needed to gain access to water.

More than 200 volunteers – including water and natural resource experts from local, state, and national organizations – are leading the students through the activities. The sessions aim to deepen the students’ understanding of their homes’ water supply and help them form a greater appreciation for one of the earth’s most valuable resources.

Generous sponsors made it possible for schools to participate at no cost. Hosted by the Water Systems Council – a collective of pump and water equipment manufacturers, distributors, dealers and state associations – the event brings the industry together to drive home the critical need to educate our youth about water. Xylem, the event’s platinum sponsor, sent a group of volunteers to support the Festival.

With golfing season already in full swing, golf course superintendents and their staff have been busy getting their greens in prime shape for players.

There are many factors to keep in mind when preparing a golf course to be tee-ready, and arguably, one of the most important considerations for golf course managers is a smooth-running irrigation system. Ongoing maintenance of the golf course irrigation system is critical to ensuring an optimal golfing environment – often the differentiator for choosy golfers who want the most comfortable and aesthetically pleasing experience possible.

Properly functioning irrigation systems and pump stations are crucial not only to keeping a golf course looking like an emerald oasis, but also to maximize energy and cost savings.

Due to their size, pump stations at golf courses can use up to 50 percent of a facility’s total energy, making it important to conduct regular maintenance and updating to realize energy conservation and financial benefits. Preventative maintenance can go a long way in providing significant savings to golf course superintendents by avoiding costly repairs and promoting water efficiency and a reduced carbon footprint.

Other benefits to ongoing pump station and irrigation system maintenance include:

  • Lower operational costs.
  • Extended equipment lifecycle.
  • Cost savings as a result of fewer unscheduled emergency service calls.
  • Greater peak performance.
  • Tighter pressure control and smoother sequencing resulting in reduced stress on the field pipe.

Golf course maintenance is an art. But that doesn’t mean it has to be difficult. In fact, it can be a cinch if you get the experts involved early and often, consistently check and maintain your equipment, take proper measures to safeguard your systems from climate conditions, and opt for energy efficiency as a rule. Visit United States Golf Association for additional tips on keeping at par with the golf course industry.

With summer heating up, there is no better time to for residents to take special care of their home’s HVAC system. There are several ways to keep homes and apartment complexes cool, while increasing the longevity of the HVAC system. If homeowners, landlords and building managers keep the following tips in mind, cool indoor temperatures and low energy bills are a breeze!

HVAC maintenance

If an HVAC system is not working properly and efficiently, it will need to work extra hard to keep indoor environments cool, thus increasing energy bills. Bring in a qualified, professional HVAC contractor to check system maintenance to ensure proper functionality before the dog days of summer take the comfort out of indoor environments.

If independent inspection is preferred over hiring a contractor, take the following steps to help prevent system malfunctions:

  • Change the air filter monthly to preserve cleanliness.
  • Clear the area around the HVAC unit of brush to ensure the system can pull enough air into the building.
  • Empty the air conditioning drain yearly to avoid backup.
  • Make sure all access panels are secure.
  • Use air conditioner cleaner to clean all coils inside the unit.

Energy-saving cooling systems

While staying cool this summer is a priority for all, it is also important to conserve energy. Follow these tips to keep bills low:

  • Tune up HVAC equipment annually to ensure efficiency.
  • Make sure doors and windows are shut tightly.
  • Seal heating and cooling ducts, so minimal air can escape the home or apartment complex.
  • Update old equipment with newer, more energy-efficient models.

Ventilation

If indoor living spaces are still too warm for comfort, even with the HVAC system running all day, it could be due to poor attic ventilation. Install room vents and attic fans to blow hot air out, while keeping cool air in.

Homeowners and residential building managers can keep these HVAC-cooling and energy-savings tips in mind to help ensure a comfortable home, so that they can worry about other priorities – like picnics and relaxing at the pool – all summer long.

Tips for saving water – and your wallet! – this summer

0
0

Independence Day has come and gone, and we are now officially in the height of summer. With temperatures skyrocketing as quickly as daily attendance numbers at community swimming pools, American water usage is at its annual peak. With the current water footprint of the average American at 32,911 glasses per day, it is more important now than ever for Americans to make a few small changes to daily water habits. By making slight adjustments to our usual behaviors, we can not only save money, but also help to conserve one of our earth’s most valuable resources.

For those looking to reduce personal water use, the home is a good place to begin modifying daily routines. Intuitive water-saving techniques, such as taking shorter showers, can put a dent in the American water footprint. Other habits that can help Americans reduce their indoor water consumption include:

  • Install low-flow plumbing fixtures to use 75 to 80 percent less water.
  • Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth to save more than 200 gallons of water per month.
  • When washing dishes, close the tap between rinses. You’ll save an average of 10 gallons of water during one round of dishes.
  • Clean clothing in an efficient washing machine that uses less than 27 gallons of water per load – half the average 54 gallons per load.

Of the 26 billion gallons of water consumed daily in the United States, about 30 percent is devoted to outdoor uses. A few simple changes to landscaping methods can drastically reduce outdoor water use. A few ways to cut back on outdoor water use include:

  • Choose drought-tolerant plants, which don’t require as much water.
  • Plant trees and shrubs in place of lawns or bare areas. They reduce water runoff and evaporation, which has been estimated to waste more than 50 percent of landscape water.
  • Start a rain barrel to collect water from your downspouts, and use this to water your lawn and garden.
  • Make sure your sprinklers are watering your lawn, not the pavement.
  • Try to avoid watering grass and plants in the middle of the day, when most of the water is lost to evaporation.

Making an effort to save water doesn’t have to completely affect a household’s daily routine. Just a few simple changes will save thousands of gallons – and dollars – throughout the year. Remember, less than one percent of all the water on Earth is usable to humans, while the rest is salt water or frozen. Reducing water use and protecting the environment are more important now than ever before, and even the smallest efforts can yield tremendous results.

For more information on sustainable water use and conservation, read about Xylem’s environmental policies and practices. For more information on water-saving plumbing products, contact your local Bell & Gossett representative.

A natural disaster strikes. Now what?

0
0

During weather-related emergencies, quick access to water removal equipment is critical. Dewatering pumps and liquid storage tanks are invaluable tools that allow municipalities and disaster relief organizations to reduce damage to assets and loss of lives.

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, dewatering pumps helped relieve the East Coast of the U.S. of massive flooding and resulting power outages. Pumps were deployed to dry out transportation tunnels, train stations, and residential and commercial buildings in New York City and surrounding areas, so that power – and daily lives – could be restored to residents of the region.

This summer, Mother Nature struck again; this time in Europe. Heavy rain between late May and early June caused the Danube, Elbe, Rhine and other rivers in the region to flood, placing parts of Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia under water. The flooding may become one of the priciest weather-related disasters in the region since 1999, with agriculture costs expected to exceed €1 billion. Through the use of dewatering pumps, floodwaters were removed from devastated areas to help keep those costs to a minimum.

When disaster strikes, where can municipalities and relief organizations quickly obtain these dewatering solutions? When you need to obtain pumps in a state of emergency, turn to a pump rental dealer who is experienced at handling emergency situations. These dealers are prepared to provide pumps designed to move floodwaters, sewage, sludge and other applications on short notice. They may also provide power backup systems to support floodwater removal in the event of a power surge.

In the aftermath of both Hurricane Sandy and the recent flooding in central Europe, pumps from the Xylem Evacuator Series and brands like Goulds Water Technology, Godwin and Flygt, quickly removed large concentrations of standing and flooding water from residential, commercial and industrial areas. For more information on emergency water removal or to locate a dealer, visit www.getwaterout.com, www.godwinpumps.com or www.flygt.com.

A watershed approach to conservation

0
0

This summer is shaping up to be a thirsty one. The annual droughts and heat waves that sweep the U.S. highlight the incredible importance of water in our daily lives, with even the earliest human settlements centered around access to fresh water. That fresh water is the result of watersheds, or areas where water flows beneath or above the land and drains into a central location, such as a river or lake.

Watersheds are unique, ranging in various sizes and shapes, and can encompass multiple states and sometimes even cross boundaries between countries. In the U.S. alone, there are more than 2,200 watersheds. Most people think of watersheds as a purely natural phenomenon, like when the snowmelt in the peaks of the Rocky Mountains drains down into the rivers and basins of the American Southwest.

However, geologists are now calling this era the Anthropocene, or Age of Man, for a reason: we are impacting the environment more now than ever before. Everything we introduce to the water system creates a ripple effect that is felt throughout the ecological community. Even the smallest individual actions can make a large impact on our environment.

Ohio’s farm community, for instance, has allied with environmental advocates, academia and agricultural businesses to protect the state’s precious water resources. Ohio’s lakes suffer from Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB) each year and for the past few years, this has affected the area’s drinking water, recreation, and the tourism industry. Farmer-to-farmer outreach in the Great Lakes watershed has led to 100 percent compliance with state water quality mandates.

This effort serves as a model for other watershed communities – by collaborating and communicating with each other, we can all make a difference to the environment and ensure that our most precious natural resource is protected. In a world where our population is ever growing and our natural resources are dwindling, this is more important than ever before.

As a result, the EPA is promoting a watershed approach to addressing today’s water resource issues. Tackling water conservation issues requires that we consider the larger picture of the ecosystem that we all share. More than $450 billion across a range of industries relies on clean water and healthy watersheds, but so does our daily household routine. We are all stakeholders, and it falls to us to communicate, collaborate, and take action.
